Frack

Frack is one of two domestic ducklings who arrived at Butterfly Valley Rescue & Sanctuary after being abandoned at a Louisville workplace. Employees found the ducklings alone and, believing they had likely been purchased as pets and later discarded, began contacting local organizations for help.

According to the individuals who found them, Louisville Metro Animal Services could not accept the ducklings and recommended taking them to a nearby pond or lake and releasing them. At the time, however, they were still very young, not fully feathered, accustomed to people, and lacked the protection and survival skills needed to live independently. Releasing them would have left them highly vulnerable to exposure, predators, and starvation.

After receiving photographs confirming they appeared to be domestic, Butterfly Valley agreed to provide sanctuary. Frack and the other duckling were brought to safety, given proper nutrition and housing, and allowed to grow without the dangers they would have faced outdoors.

Frack’s story is a reminder that unwanted domestic waterfowl cannot simply be released into the wild. Domestic ducks depend on human care, and when abandoned, they often need rescue to survive.
