Caroline

Caroline is a tiny visually impaired goat whose story began at Scapegoat Farms in Crofton, Kentucky. Born July 31, 2026 as one of triplets and weighing only about 1.6 pounds, she was small but determined from the start. She took to the bottle like a champ, but her caregivers quickly realized that she did not see the world the same way as her siblings. Indoors she frequently bumped into objects, while outdoors in brighter light she appeared to navigate more successfully, raising the possibility that she may have some light, shadow, or limited functional vision.

Her previous caregivers suspected that oxygen deprivation during birth may have contributed to her vision impairment, although the cause and degree of vision loss have not yet been medically confirmed. What was never in question was how deeply Caroline was loved. Before entrusting her to Butterfly Valley, her family carefully asked about the sanctuary's shelters, fencing, years of experience, veterinary support, work schedules, and ability to provide the individual care she would need. Their instructions were simple: if it was not the right place for Caroline, bring her home. They even sent a supply of frozen goat milk so she could continue the diet she already knew.

Caroline arrived at Butterfly Valley on August 7, 2026 at just one week old. Her care focuses on bottle feeding, close neonatal monitoring, consistent routines, and a safe environment that will allow her to learn her surroundings as we continue to understand exactly how much she can see and what adaptations will help her thrive.

Caroline's story is a beautiful reminder that the goal is not to make an animal less different. It is to create a world where those differences do not prevent them from living a safe, joyful, full life. At Butterfly Valley, different is beautiful.
