Orville

Orville is a gentle paint Silkie rooster who came to Butterfly Valley after losing mobility in one leg. His previous caregiver had already helped him regain enough strength to stand on that leg, but the other chickens were treating him unkindly. With another critically injured bird requiring round-the-clock care, she made the compassionate decision to find Orville a place where he could receive more time, attention, and protection.

He was anxious when he first arrived, but his breathing settled as soon as he realized he was safe. He began eating and drinking, made the sweetest purring sounds, and spent his first night cuddled beside Hooman Mudder. Caroline volunteered to help him feel at home, snuggling beside him as though they had always known one another. Because his soft paint coloring reminded everyone of Popcorn, he was named Orville after Orville Redenbacher.

At first, Orville’s progress was remarkable. When he arrived, he could barely stand without help and could not walk. After only a few days of patient therapy, encouragement, and one-on-one support, he began standing, taking steps, and growing stronger. More recently, however, he developed unusual neurological behaviors that changed the understanding of his original leg problem. After additional questioning and discussion, his veterinarian advised that the progression is near-certainly consistent with Marek’s disease. This remains a presumptive clinical diagnosis rather than a laboratory-confirmed one.

Orville now receives care shaped around the bird he is today: protected housing, close observation, help with safe movement, easy access to food and water, and comfort-focused support as his needs change. His story is not only about the steps he regained or the diagnosis that followed. It is about the relief of finally being able to exhale, the trust that grew through patient care, and a little rooster whose worth has never depended on how steadily he can stand.
