Raquel
Raquel was a tiny piglet whose entire life was defined by the love of people who refused to give up on her. Abandoned by her mother shortly after birth, Raquel was first cared for by a remarkable young rescuer who hand-raised her and fought tirelessly to keep her and her surviving littermates alive. When neurological symptoms began to appear at just one week old, she made the difficult journey to Butterfly Valley Rescue & Sanctuary, where a new team of people stood ready to continue that fight.
Though she weighed less than two pounds, Raquel faced enormous challenges with incredible determination. Diagnosed with severe pneumonia and showing signs of neurological disease, she received around-the-clock care, emergency veterinary treatment, antibiotics, vitamins, and every possible opportunity to recover. Through it all, she remained bright, gentle, and eager to keep trying.
Less than a day after arriving at the sanctuary, Raquel's condition suddenly deteriorated. After prolonged seizures, she passed peacefully in Brandon's arms before a final decision ever had to be made. Her time at Butterfly Valley lasted only hours, but those hours were filled with warmth, safety, compassion, and unconditional love.
Raquel's story is a reminder that rescue is not measured by how long a life lasts, but by whether that life was seen, cherished, and fought for. Though her journey was heartbreakingly brief, she was never alone, and she will always be remembered.
