Lillie

Lillie is a Mille Fleur d'Uccle hen who arrived at Butterfly Valley Rescue & Sanctuary after being born with a rare congenital difference affecting one of her eyes. She hatched with only one functional eye, the result of a congenital defect in which the other eye was either absent or failed to fully develop before hatch. Although uncommon in backyard poultry, chicks with this condition can often live full, healthy lives when they have the opportunity to adapt in a safe and supportive environment.

Before arriving at the sanctuary, Lillie was lovingly cared for in her previous home. As she grew, however, her limited field of vision made it increasingly difficult to compete with her flockmates. She began experiencing social challenges, was occasionally picked on by the other chickens, and was not always able to access food as successfully as the rest of the flock. Recognizing that she would benefit from an environment designed around her needs, her caretaker made the difficult but compassionate decision to seek a specialized placement.

At Butterfly Valley, Lillie joined a group of young residents, many of whom have disabilities or congenital differences of their own. With appropriate housing, reduced competition, and the opportunity to learn at her own pace, she quickly demonstrated just how adaptable she is. Like many animals with vision differences, Lillie has learned to rely on her remaining eye and has become increasingly confident as she explores her surroundings, interacts with her flockmates, and develops normal chick behaviors.

Lillie's story highlights an important truth about congenital differences: they do not automatically limit an animal's quality of life. While vision on one side presents unique challenges, it does not define who she is or prevent her from thriving. Given the right environment, patient observation, and individualized care, Lillie has shown that she is every bit as curious, resilient, and capable as any other chick.

Her journey reflects Butterfly Valley's mission to provide lifelong opportunities for animals whose differences simply require a different approach, not a different value.
