Tatsumaki

Tatsumaki was the steadfast king of the coop whose strength, courage, and gentle heart made him one of the most unforgettable residents at Butterfly Valley Rescue & Sanctuary. Hatched during a tornado warning, he was given the name Tatsumaki, the Japanese word for "tornado"—a name that perfectly matched the powerful presence he would grow into.

As the son of the beloved rooster Francis, Tatsumaki naturally stepped into the role of protector and leader. Towering over much of the flock, he spent nearly five years watching over his family with quiet confidence, always alert to danger and always putting the safety of his hens first. Yet beneath his commanding presence was an incredibly affectionate soul. The fierce guardian of the yard would instantly soften the moment he was picked up, happily settling into the arms of the people he trusted most.

After losing his comb to severe frostbite during an especially brutal winter, Tatsumaki carried on as if nothing had changed. His appearance never defined him—his courage, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to his flock did. He remained the unquestioned leader until the very end.

Though Tatsumaki's crow no longer echoes across the sanctuary, his legacy lives on in every life he protected and every lesson he taught about quiet strength, faithful leadership, and unconditional trust. He will always be remembered as our gentle giant, our fearless guardian, and our king of the coop.
