Chance
Chance was a tiny rooster whose name perfectly captured the gift he was given—a chance. For the first three months of his life, he lived alone in a crate, known only as "the disabled chicken" because he had hatched with one foot turned upside down. Unable to walk like other chickens and considered unworthy of further effort, Chance's future seemed all but decided until he found his way to Butterfly Valley Rescue & Sanctuary.
From the moment he arrived, Chance showed everyone that his spirit was far stronger than his physical challenges. Though he balanced mostly on one leg, he eagerly explored the world around him, soaking up cuddles, accompanying Hooman Mudder on adventures, meeting countless new friends at community events, and charming everyone with his gentle personality. In just two short weeks, he became a beloved ambassador for the sanctuary's mission that different is beautiful.
Then, just as suddenly as he had entered our lives, Chance was gone. After spending the morning peacefully nestled in Nikki's arms, he suffered a sudden neurological event and passed away on the way home. His time with us was heartbreakingly brief, but it was filled with everything every animal deserves: love, safety, adventure, and the certainty that he mattered.
Chance reminded us that worth is never measured by perfection or productivity. Sometimes all someone needs is a single chance to show the world who they truly are. And Chance did exactly that.
