Black Eyed Susan

Black Eyed Susan was a resilient Embden goose whose determination, larger-than-life personality, and unmistakable honks made her one of the most beloved residents at Butterfly Valley Rescue & Sanctuary. She arrived at just 10 weeks old alongside her sister, Suzy Q, both suffering from severe wry neck caused by a vitamin deficiency. Through dedicated treatment and unwavering care, Susan overcame the odds and grew into a confident, spirited ambassador for animals with differences.

Susan was equal parts stubborn, mischievous, and affectionate. Whether she was trudging through deep snow, charming guests at outreach events, or keeping everyone on their toes with her endless commentary, she embraced life with fearless enthusiasm. She also proved to be an incredible fighter, surviving a mysterious life-threatening illness that required hand-feeding, medications, supplements, and even time in a wheelchair before making a remarkable recovery.

Following the loss of her beloved sister, Suzy Q, Susan carried on with the same bold spirit that had always defined her. Though her life was tragically cut short after an apparent wildlife attack, her legacy lives on in the countless people she helped inspire. Black Eyed Susan reminded everyone she met that resilience comes in many forms—and that sometimes the loudest, most stubborn souls leave the biggest silence behind when they're gone.
